SYSTAN has developed long- and short-term plans for transportation operations and resource allocation in complex environments characterized by social and political issues, economic considerations, technological developments, and institutional constraints. In support of its planning activities, the firm has developed a wide range of computer programs, including network models, port operations simulators, economic prototypes, statistical analysis packages, mode-shift forecasts, macro-analytic programs, and demand forecasting tools.REPRESENTATIVE PROJECTS National Transport Surveys. Conducted a reconnaissance of transport facilities and documented traffic flow in support of planning activities in several countries, including Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and Zaire. (Clients: World Bank; Transport Policy Groups of the Government of Brazil; U.S. Agency for International Development) National Transport Plans. Developed national transportation plans and investment programs for a number of countries, including Portugal, Costa Rica, Central America, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia. (Clients: Costa Rican Ministry of Public Works and Transportation; Central American Bank for Economic Integration; National Highway Department of Brazil) HOV Demand Model. Participated in the development of a state-of-the art computer model designed to predict traffic flow from carpool formation, mode shifts, and route diversion on newly opened HOV lanes. (Client: Federal Highway Administration) Network Optimizattion. Developed and demonstrated techniques for determining optimal route configurations for innovative transit systems. (Client: Internal Research) Macroscopic Modeling of Integrated Urban Transportation Systems. Developed and demonstrated a macroscopic model capable of representing the key transportation elements of an integrated, multimodal regional transportation network. Separate models of feeder systems, line-haul corridors, and downtown distribution systems were combined in a modular representation of the region suitable for use in transportation planning and policy analysis.
